The Oklahoma women’s basketball team dropped a spot in the latest Associated Press Top 25 that was released Monday, but that doesn’t mean it made any sense.
The Sooners played just one game last week and beat Ole Miss 66-56 on the road. They lost to a pair of top-15 teams the week before that and fell two slots while still remaining in the top 15.
Despite the win last week, though, the Sooners still slipped one spot from No. 15 to No. 16 in the latest AP Top 25.
It’s the first time all season OU has been outside of the top 15 after starting at No. 10 in the preseason.
Dropping in the rankings after a win wasn’t the biggest head scratcher of how the latest rankings unfolded, though. The Tennessee Volunteers are who surpassed the Sooners.
The Volunteers were boosted four spots after upsetting then-No. 5 UConn 80-76 on Thursday before losing to then-No. 6 LSU 82-77 on Sunday.
The Sooners beat Tennessee 87-86 on Jan. 5 in Knoxville. A lot can change in over a month, but the fact a team already beat another should keep the losing team from jumping the winning team.
OU has lost two of its last three games. The Sooners endured a stretch of four games that included three top-15 opponents.
Things are about to get easier for the Sooners, though. No. 21 Alabama is the only currently ranked team left on OU’s schedule with six games left.
The Sooners will host Auburn at 7 p.m. CT Monday night at Lloyd Noble Center. They will then travel to Missouri on Sunday.
