The Oklahoma Sooners are on the brink of making history in the worst way possible.
The Sooners suffered another blowout on Wednesday night, this time to Kentucky 94-78 in Lexington. The embarrassment dropped OU below .500 on the season at 11-12 as the Sooners also remain at the bottom of SEC standings with a 1-9 conference record.
Oklahoma extends SEC losing streak under Porter Moser
It was the Sooners' ninth loss in a row, so what is hopefully Porter Moser's final OU squad is now one loss away from tying history with the longest losing streak in program history at 10, and fans should expect these Sooners to go in the record book.
To make matters worse on Wednesday, the loss came at the hands of former Sooner Otega Oweh, who Moser had in Norman for two seasons before he headed to Kentucky and emerged as the Wildcats' leading scorer the past two seasons. Oweh rubbed salt in the wound again as he led Kentucky with 24 points in the win. In two contests against his old team last season, Oweh scored 28 and 27, respectively, and had a pair of game-winning shots.
After letting talent like Oweh consistently walk away while blaming NIL and resources, Moser assembled his most talented Transfer Portal class yet this offseason after adding NBA All-Star Trae Young as an assistant general manager as Young not only could help with recruitment, but even donated $1 million to the cause.
Yet, the Sooners have somehow never been in a worse situation than right now as Moser sporadically makes substitutions just moments into the game and has guys like Kuol Atak, who show promise every time on the court, but still stay on the bench.
These Sooners are destined for history with Moser, especially considering what he's supposed to guide them through ahead. Already riding a nine-game losing streak, OU just completed the easiest part of its SEC schedule. According to ESPN's Men's College Basketball Power Index, the Sooners have the toughest remaining schedule in the country.
Next, the Sooners host No. 15 Vanderbilt on Saturday to surely tie the record. After that, OU fans at least get a week-long break before Moser leads the Sooners into miserable history with a likely home loss to Georgia on Feb. 14.
These Sooners are making the worst kind of history, and the Porter Moser era should also be history in Oklahoma.
