Thanks to the great Dr. Steven Shin, the Oklahoma Sooners got their quarterback back in record time.
Dr. Shin became a viral sensation, not only in Sooner Nation, but throughout college football when he was tasked to perform surgery on the throwing hand of OU quarterback John Mateer. Mateer returned to action in just 17 days and has played two games already since being injured against Auburn on Sept. 20, and on Monday, Mateer finally spoke about his famous surgeon.
John Mateer says OU is trying to bring Dr. Steven Shin to Norman
"It's different. If he comes to Norman he'll really feel it," Mateer said of Dr. Shin's local fame. "He's probably aware, but it's hard to really understand until you come here."
Dr. Shin has helped heal the stars of plenty of fan bases before, but none heralded him as a hero quite like Sooner Nation did. His patient list includes former New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees, Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love, Golden State Warriors All-Star guard Stephen Curry, Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff and, more recently, Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star Jalen Williams, who recently praised Dr. Shin after a successful wrist surgery.
"I'll keep it short and sweet. He did Kobe's (Bryant)," Williams said during the Thunder's media day. "Dr. Shin's awesome. He's been good throughout like the rehab process and just the surgery in general."
Between Williams and Mateer, there's not a state that loves Dr. Shin more than Oklahoma. OU fans have pleaded for Dr. Shin to attend a game as a special guest at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Some even joked and made memes on social media of Dr. Shin leading the Sooners onto the field.
"We're trying (to get Dr. Shin to Norman)," Mateer said. "He's busy, obviously. He's pretty important, but we'll try. I think it'd be awesome."
