New OU statue?
There are statues all over Oklahoma's campus, but there could be one more soon.
Longtime OU athletic director Joe Castiglione on Tuesday officially announced his plans to retire during a press conference. Entering his 28th year, Castiglione is the longest-tenured AD in major college sports and has led some of the biggest moves in Sooner history during that time.
During Castiglione's retirement press conference, OU president Joseph Harroz Jr. was asked about Castiglione getting a statue one day because of his contributions to OU. It sounded like that is definitely a possibility.
"There'll be more news on this front," Harroz said. "There is going to be an honor. It will likely be in bronze, and we’ll address that it at a later time."
Jeremiah Fears set for NBA debut
Jeremiah Fears' NBA career is tipping off.
After just one season as OU's point guard and leading the Sooners in scoring, Fears was the seventh overall pick by the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2025 NBA Draft. Fears will make his NBA debut when the Pelicans start NBA Summer League play against the Minnesota Timberwolves at 2:30 p.m. CT Thursday in Las Vegas. The game will be on ESPN2.
Oregon hires OU softball great
There are a lot of branches from Patty Gasso's coaching tree in Eugene, Oregon.
Oregon announced on Wednesday that it hired former OU pitcher Paige Parker as the Ducks' Director of Player Development. Parker also spent a season in 2020 as a volunteer assistant on OU's staff before her coaching career really took off.
Parker was hired by her old OU pitching coach Melyssa Lombardi, who was an assistant under Gasso for 21 years before becoming Oregon's head coach in 2018. Including Lombardi and Parker, Oregon has four coaches on its staff that previously played or coached for the Sooners.
