Sooners fans have seen this DeMarco Murray story before

Another year, another DeMarco Murray exit scare.

Exactly a year to the day, there are rumors once again that someone else is looking to swipe Oklahoma running backs coach DeMarco Murray away from the Sooners.

CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz reported on Wednesday, Feb. 11, that Murray is a target of the Kansas City Chiefs for their running backs coach opening. On Feb. 11, 2025, reports surfaced that Murray was a top candidate to be Penn State's next running backs coach, but by the time the night was over, a new report stated Murray interviewed for the position but was going to stay at his alma mater.

Kansas City Chiefs reportedly targeting DeMarco Murray

And Feb. 11 isn't the only time these reports pop up. He was also reportedly a candidate for the Dallas Cowboys' running backs coach position last offseason. Ohio State and the Las Vegas Raiders have also apparently wanted Murray in the last few years.

Murray flirting with other opportunities ended with a couple of raises from OU to keep him in Norman, but when almost the entire staff got a raise a few weeks ago, Murray was one of just two position coaches that didn't get one.

As these reports continue to pop up time and time again, Murray is sure to eventually actually leave his alma mater. Leaving for the same position at a different college didn't make much sense, though. However, an opportunity in the NFL with the Chiefs, who just ended a run of making three Super Bowls in a row under Andy Reid, could be enough to finally lure Murray away.

Murray played running back in the NFL himself for seven seasons for the Cowboys, Titans and Eagles. He was NFL Offensive Player of the Year and First-Team All-Pro in 2014, his final season in Dallas. Before an NFL career, Murray was a two-time First-Team All-Big 12 honoree for the Sooners while rushing for over 1,000 yards as a sophomore and senior.

When his playing career ended, Murray spent a year in broadcasting before starting his coaching career in 2019 as Arizona's running backs coach. He then got his current role with his alma mater the next year.

If Murray does actually leave this time, it would be the second time this season Brent Venables lost an assistant to the NFL. Cornerbacks coach Jay Valai left OU last week to be the Buffalo Bills' new defensive backs coach.
