The starting cannon was fired for the pursuit of the 2027 college football recruiting class, but in true Sooner fashion, the Oklahoma Sooners already had a head start.
Midnight Sunday was the start of the contact period for 2027 football recruits, meaning college coaches could call and text those prospects directly for the first time. For top recruits, text messages started buzzing their phones at the tick of midnight, including from the Sooners.
Contact period opens for 2027 college football recruiting class
Despite no official contact, OU and every other football program have already extended offers to 2027 recruits, who will be juniors this season. Now, a true relationship can just finally be formed and players can officially make verbal commitments to schools.
So far, the Sooners don't have any commitments from the 2027 class while focusing on the looming 2026 group recently, but OU already hit the 2027 class hard within the first 24 hours. That included an epic video about OU DNA that was narrated by former OU linebacker and current Director of SOUL Mission Caleb Kelly.

According to 247Sports, the Sooners have already extended 115 offers to 2027 athletes. Of those 115 offers, only five players have already made early commitments. That ultimately means nothing at this point in the process, though.
The position OU is after the most is cornerback, with 23 offers to the position so far. Next is wide receiver with 15.
The early headliner for the Sooners' 2027 class could be four-star quarterback Peyton "Pop" Houston, who has emerged as offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle's top quarterback target for the class. Houston is a consensus four-star recruit out of Evangel Christian Academy in Shreveport, Louisiana. He threw for a gaudy 4,480 yards and 38 touchdowns compared to six interceptions in 12 games last season as a sophomore, including a record-breaking 817-yard performance.
According to 247Sports, offensive tackle Kennedy Brown and cornerback John Meredith III are currently OU's highest-rated prospects at 95.
