Oklahoma had the most impactful transfer for Week 10, but it was someone no one ever saw coming

Who would have thought?

It would be no surprise before the season to think the Oklahoma Sooners, for at least one week, would have the most impactful transfer addition in college football. However, it would be assumed the honor would go to quarterback John Mateer or running back Jaydn Ott, who were both No. 1 at their positions when they signed with the Sooners out of the Transfer Portal this offseason.

Pete Nakos of On3, though, deemed OU kicker Tate Sandell as the the Week 10 most impactful Transfer Portal player after his historical performance in the Sooners' 33-27 road win over Tennessee on Saturday in Knoxville.

Tate Sandell named most impactful transfer player

Between four field goals and three PATs, Sandell was responsible for nearly half of the Sooners' 33 points. He had makes of 55, 51, 40 and 55 yards, respectively. It was ultimately a night of broken records for Sandell.

Sandell nailed a 55-yarder for his first make that not only tied his career-long, but also broke the Neyland Stadium record for longest field goal. He then made another from the same distance in the fourth quarter to help seal the Sooners' victory.

Sandell set a school record with three made field goals of more than 50 yards in a single game. He also established a new single-season school records with six field goals of 50-plus yards and 12 from 40 or more.

OU also dug up a new record later on that Sandell's average of 50.3 yards per make set a single-game FBS record for longest average distance of field-goal makes with a minimum of four conversions.

The performance also earned Sandell SEC Special Teams Player of the Week honors on Monday.

Sandell transferred this spring to OU from UTSA for his redshirt junior season. He also broke school records at UTSA with a 54-yard field goal and 62 touchbacks on kickoffs.

The Sooners' spring transfer additions also included Ott, starting center Jake Maikkula, defensive tackle Ricky Lolohea, wide receiver Jer'Michael Carter and third-string quarterback Whitt Newbauer, but even as a special teams player, it's clear Sandell was the most vital addition.
