Baker Mayfield will never stop making Oklahoma better.
On Wednesday evening, No. 1 transfer portal prospect John Mateer committed to Oklahoma. Mateer was the quarterback at Washington State this season and followed his offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle, to Norman.
But apparently Arbuckle wasn't the main person getting Mateer to OU.
Toby Rowland, the Voice of the Sooners, posted on X that Mayfield was ultimately who convinced Mateer to finally committ to OU after two days in the transfer portal.
Earlier reports said that Miami was also pursuing Mateer, but Rowland mentioned that North Carolina and new coach Bill Belichick were also after Mateer.
But according to Rowland, Mayfield gave Mateer a call, and soon after, Mateer was a Sooner.
Sources tell me that in addition to Miami, North Carolina and Bill Belichick got involved late in the John Mateer sweepstakes. Baker Mayfield, however, helped seal the deal by calling Mateer and making the final case for OU. Soon thereafter Mateer made it official.

Mayfield himself also transferred to OU from Texas Tech. However, Mayfield did not do it in the heyday of transferring and was not as sought after as Mateer. Nonetheless, Mayfield transformed into a Heisman Trophy winner and first overall NFL Draft pick while at Oklahoma. He was a backup at Texas Tech.
Mateer, though, was one of the most productive quarterbacks in the country this season. He's dangerous as both a passer and a runner, scoring 44 total TDs, which was the most in all of FBS. He threw for 3,139 yards and 29 TDs. He also rushed for 826 yards and 15 scores.
Mateer was OU's fourth portal addittion so far, but could start a domino effect of more talent coming to Norman. He was the third offensive addition, joining Stanford offensive lineman Luke Baklenko and Arkansas-Pine Bluff receiver Javonnie Gibson, who committed just hours before Mateer.
