Missouri quietly becoming dangerous matchup for inconsistent Sooners

As the Sooners are set to host Missouri this weekend, they hope to get back to their winning ways against a team that's improved greatly this season.

Over the last couple of weeks, one thing has been missing for Oklahoma baseball and that is complementary baseball. The complete package of a productive offense, along with quality starting pitching and bullpen relief, has been hard to find over the last several weeks for the Sooners.

Normally, Missouri would be the common cure to whatever was wrong with your team, but a much-improved Tigers team under third-year head coach Kerrick Johnson could cause more of a challenge than in the past when they visit OU this weekend. Missouri rolls into Norman with a 20-17 record and is 3-12 in SEC play. The Tigers won only three SEC games in total last season and already eclipsed 2025's win total.

Oklahoma can't overlook Mizzou while desperate for SEC wins

The Tigers are a sneaky team that could steal a game or two if the Sooners aren't on their A-game. They won a series in Lexington against Kentucky to start the month of April, along with a victory in Knoxville against Tennessee.

Missouri has had a whole week off after its midweek matchup against Missouri State was canceled due to weather.

For Oklahoma, it's coming off a wild weekend series win in Nashville against Vanderbilt and a disappointing midweek loss to Oklahoma State on Tuesday.

The big news on the Oklahoma side of things is that it will have its complete pitching rotation for the first time since its weekend series against Texas three weeks ago. Cord Rager returns to the Sooner rotation after having to miss the last two series with a strained lat muscle. LJ Mercurius has settled into the Friday night starting role and Cam Johnson will hold things down for the Sooners on Saturday.

If Oklahoma is going to be able to win the series, it needs its pitching staff to continue to lock in and the offensive outburst to continue.

There never is an "off week" in the SEC, but a win or a series sweep would be massive for the Sooners' hosting chances, especially with upcoming matchups on the road against Auburn and another huge home series in Norman against Florida.
