Just a day after officially signing with the South Carolina Gamecocks, a report surfaced on Thursday that former Oklahoma wide receiver Jayden Gibson was arrested while he was still a Sooner.

Jordan Kaye of The State Newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina, reported that Gibson was arrested in May for a "domestic violence-related charge" when, "police said they found evidence of 'fresh injuries' on his girlfriend." According to Kaye, South Carolina, coached by former OU offensive coordinator Shane Beamer, was aware of the situation before it signed Gibson out of the Transfer Portal.

The incident reportedly happened in Las Vegas, which is why it went rather unnoticed in Oklahoma, where this arrest would have been public record if it happened in the state. However, there were still rumors that Gibson was in trouble off the field after not seeing the field early on in 2025 and ultimately leaving the program midseason with plans to transfer.

“Jayden’s no longer with the team,” OU head coach Brent Venables simply said when he announced Gibson's status on Oct. 16.

Gibson then denied these rumors shortly after committing to South Carolina and blamed his frequent injuries as the only reason he left Oklahoma.

"the ONLY reason OU and I parted ways was because of my injuries. anything else being spread is false information from people who don’t know any details , just what they see on there phones," Gibson wrote in his post on X on Jan. 5.

Gibson hadn't touched the field at OU since 2023 because of reported injuries. He had 14 catches for 375 yards and five touchdowns as a sophomore and was primed for a breakout season in 2024. However, before things even got started, Gibson suffered a season-ending knee injury during fall camp. Gibson was then sidelined again in 2025 before ultimately leaving the program in October.
