Jamison Roberts finally eases OU commitment concerns after Ben Arbuckle firing

The Oklahoma Sooners might not know who will be their offensive coordinator of the future, but they might at least have a better idea of who their future quarterback is.

There was worry that OU 2027 quarterback commit Jamison Roberts would be changing his mind after the Sooners fired offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, who jumped on Roberts early and recruited him to Oklahoma. Shortly after Arbuckle's firing, Roberts told Rivals, "No comment at this time," about his status.

After a few days, though, Roberts has cleared his head and confirmed to multiple recruiting experts on Wednesday that he's still committed to the Sooners.

“Of course I am, just wanted to take a step back and view the situation. I’m still 100% locked in," Roberts told OU Insider's Brandon Drumm.

Oklahoma keeps 2027 QB commit, but position group is extremely shaky

There's hope Roberts could be the future at the quarterback position for the Sooners after a breakout senior campaign. Having him still locked in could also help Brent Venables find the right offensive coordinator, since he would already have a young QB ready to be developed.

Roberts has been on a tear lately for Saraland High School in Alabama. He's completed 75% of his passes for 2,712 yards and 33 touchdowns with only two interceptions in 10 games, according to MaxPreps. Just two weeks ago, he broke a school record with 444 passing yards in a game. He also rushed for another 321 yards and nine scores.

Thanks to Roberts, Saraland High School is sitting at 9-1 and riding an eight-game winning streak into the playoffs.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Roberts, listed at 6-foot-3, is the No. 19 QB in the 2027 class and No. 240 overall player in the 2027 class as a four-star prospect. Those ratings should improve even more after the show Roberts has put on as a senior.

Roberts' assurance came after 2028 QB commit Trey Tagliaferri also immediately ensured he still planned on being a Sooner.

“It doesn’t change anything. Still love OU and all of the coaches and people," Tagliaferri told SoonerScoop's Parker Thune.

Regardless, there's no doubt other programs will attack while both prospects have lost a main point of contact at OU, especially as Roberts continues to rise only a month before the Early Signing Period opens.

Finding the right QB will be vital for the Sooners' next OC. Oklahoma had become QBU, but in the last three seasons under Venables, it hasn't even produced a reliable starter. Jackson Arnold was a bust in 2024 as a former five-star recruit, and then Mateer has flopped the past two seasons after following Arbuckle as the top QB prospect in the Transfer Portal in 2025.

The entire position has been mishandled by Arbuckle. Because of that, not only will Mateer graduate, but backups Whitt Newbauer and Bowe Bentley feel destined to transfer after never getting a real chance to prove themselves. Bentley also committed to Arbuckle, which is yet another influence to push him out.

OU's next OC will likely have the immediate task of assembling an entire QB room. The transfer portal will probably be used to find next season's starter, but getting Roberts to Norman will not only be crucial for the future of the position, but also for immediate depth in 2027.
