Jamison Roberts could give Oklahoma fans vain hope for the future at QB

Is Roberts the future at QB for the Sooners?

Nothing sours an Oklahoma fan's mood more right now than bringing up the quarterback position, but maybe, just maybe, it's something Sooner Nation can soon be proud of again.

OU 2027 commit Jamison Roberts has been absolutely dominating in his final season with Saraland High School in Alabama before heading to Norman this spring. Meanwhile at OU, fans have been screaming for John Mateer to get benched as QB1, but apparently no matter how much he turns the ball over, Mateer is still the Sooners' best option at quarterback.

Roberts has been stellar in his prep career since taking over as a junior, which is why he earned an OU offer, but he's reached a new gear in the last few games as his senior campaign winds down.

Last week against Spanish Fort High School, Roberts threw for a school-record 444 passing yards while completing 21 of his 27 passes. He accounted for six total touchdowns in the win, with four through the air and two more on the ground.

According to MaxPreps, Roberts has completed 76.5% of his passes for 2,447 yards and 31 touchdowns with only one interception in nine games this season. Those eye-popping numbers will catch anyone's attention, but OU fans will focus on that lone interception after three seasons of watching quarterbacks who are turnover-prone. His accuracy is outstanding, as he's completed over 90% of his passes in a game twice this season.

Roberts has also proven to be dangerous with his legs, rushing for another 257 yards and six scores. He doesn't rely on his scrambling ability, but he can use it when necessary to be more productive.

What Roberts has done as a senior should bolster his recruiting rankings even more before the early signing period opens in December. According to the 247Sports Composite, Roberts, listed at 6-foot-3, is the No. 19 QB and No. 240 overall player in the 2027 class as a four-star prospect.

Ben Arbuckle's future as Sooners' OC could also decide Jamison Roberts' fate

The Sooners benefited from seeing this rise coming before just about everyone else did. He committed to OU back in May over offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss, South Carolina, and more. OU was just his second SEC offer after in-state Auburn.

That early belief from offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, though, is also the catch in Roberts' promising future wearing crimson and cream. Arbuckle, as he did with 2026 signee Bowe Bentley, jumped on Roberts early after beating other major programs to the punch. That keen eye paid off in getting both recruits to commit.

Now here's the catch: Arbuckle is on the hot seat as the Sooners' OC, and most OU fans are ready to see him go. His offense has been disappointing for two seasons now, and so has the quarterback he brought with him, with no sign of improvement.

If Arbuckle is fired, then the Sooners likely lose both Roberts and Bentley, especially after Bentley hasn't gotten any time this season, despite all of Mateer's mistakes. That would then put OU behind in finding a 2027 QB, while also needing to find a starter to replace Mateer and a reliable backup, especially if Whitt Newbauer transfers, which seems likely after not getting a chance this year.

The Sooners' 2027 season could rely on general manager Jim Nagy finding the right quarterback in the transfer portal over the offseason with no heir to the position.

Roberts can certainly ignite hope for the future at quarterback for the Sooners, but sometimes that hope kills.
