History shows that Oklahoma's first 2025 loss to Dallas Baptist shouldn't be surprise

It's not necessarily surprising that Dallas Baptist ended Oklahoma baseball's 11-game win streak to open the 2025 season. The Patriots seem to have the Sooners' number.

The 13th-ranked Sooners won their first 11 games this season by an average margin of five runs, but on Tuesday night in Dallas, they came up empty in the run department in an 11-0 seven-inning whitewash by the No. 21 Patriots of Dallas Baptist. Prior to Tuesday, Oklahoma had not given up more than five runs in a game this season.

At first impression, that might not seem like a big deal. Yes, it was Oklahoma's first loss of the season, and the 11-0 start to the season marked the Sooners' best since opening the 2011 campaign with 16 consecutive wins, but the 2025 season isn't even a fourth over at this stage, and Oklahoma wasn't going to go undefeated. The Sooners were bound to lose sometime.

It's not as if Dallas Baptist (9-3) isn't a good team. In 17-plus seasons under head coach Dan Heefner, the Patriots have won 661 games (661-329-1) for a winning percentage of .667. That ranks as the eighth-best in the nation among active Division-I coaches. DBU has 11 40-win seasons under Heefner in the past 10 seasons, and the Patriots' average 43 wins over the past decade is tied for third-best in the country.

Since 2011, Dallas Baptist has been particularly hard on Oklahoma. Over that time, DBU has won 17 of the 22 games played between the two teams, including the shutout on Tuesday night.

It hasn't always been that way, though. Oklahoma won the first 14 games in the series, which began in 1978. Prior to 2011, the Sooners had won 21 of the 23 games. Over the last 15 years, however, the series record has tightened up considerably, although OU still owns a 26-19 record against the Patriots.

Oklahoma and Dallas Baptist will play once more this regular season, a midweek game on April 8 at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman. The Sooners are 4-6 in the last 10 games vs. DBU in Norman.
