For Oklahoma softball fans not aware of Goose Hutchens yet, she just promptly introduced herself to elevate what were already sky-high expectations for the freshman.

Hutchens donned crimson and cream for the first time on Saturday when the Sooners started their fall ball schedule with a 14-0 win against Tarleton State at Love's Field. Hutchens, batting from the left side of the plate, blasted an opposite-field home run over right field, which was not only a sign of what was to come for the day, but also for her OU career.

She finished her first-ever college action with four hits, two home runs, and six RBI. Yes, competition during the real season will be a lot more challenging than Tarleton State, especially in the SEC, but this was still a preview that Hutchens will live up to all the hype.

Not only was it Hutchen's first college at-bat, but she should just now be winding down her preps career at in-state Wagoner High School. She reclassified from the 2027 class to 2026 over the summer to skip her senior year and join the Sooners' roster this season.

Hutchens was the top overall recruit for the 2026 class, per Softball America, and even after jumping up a group, she was still the No. 2 prospect for the 2027 class behind only new OU teammate Payton Westra. She was also the top catcher in the class and the best prospect from the state of Oklahoma.

During her sophomore season in 2024, Hutchens broke the Oklahoma single-season record with 23 home runs, even while opposing coaches tried to pitch around her. She also hit .654 with 45 RBI and 70 runs scored. She did not compete much at the high school level as a junior while playing with Team USA.

She was a member of the United States U-18 Women's National Team, which she made at only 16 years old, and then made again last year. She was the tournament MVP as the team won gold at the World Baseball Softball Confederation.

Goose Hutchens can accomplish Kendall Wells expectations

Kendall Wells just set lofty expectations for OU freshmen that felt unachievable, but only a year later, Hutchens could reach that same level as a rookie.

Wells also raised a lot of eyebrows last fall with her powerful bat, then during the season set the NCAA single-season freshman, SEC single-season, and OU single-season home run records with 39 while also batting .358. She would have broken the all-time NCAA record for most homers in a season that had stood since 1995, but UCLA's Megan Grant outpaced Wells with 42 long balls.

The Sooners as a team were also chasing their own record for most home runs in a season, and although they surpassed their old mark, UCLA set the new record at 209 homers, while OU peaked at 187.

Now, not only do the Sooners return Wells and four other starters to their lineup, but Hutchens will also slot in as clearly another potent bat to help surpass history this time and also get OU back to the Women's College World Series after falling short last season.
