Goose Hutchens instantly takes Oklahoma’s lineup from flirting with history to breaking it

Christmas came in July for Patty Gasso as the Oklahoma Sooners were just given a surprise early gift in local star Juliana "Goose" Hutchens.

OU made it official on Thursday that Hutchens, the top recruit in the 2027 class, is reclassifying to 2026 so she can join the Sooners a year early for next season. She's already signed with OU to make the move official and will be on the 2027 roster as a catcher

"I always trust God's timing," Hutchens said in OU's press release. "I am so excited for this new step in life."

There will be no adjustment necessary for Hutchens, even with leaving high school a year early and starting her college career at the same time she'd be wrapping up her senior year at Wagoner High School (OK). She will immediately make an impact as a young freshman and will likely even carve out a starting spot in a lineup that just chased home run history last season.

Hutchens has been playing with the United States U-18 Women's National Team on top of with her high school team and travel ball with Iowa Premier Fastpitch. Last year, after just her sophomore season, Hutchens not only made the U-18 USA Team at 16 years old, but was tournament MVP as the team won gold at the World Baseball Softball Confederation. She's also now on the 2026 team.

During her sophomore season in 2024, Hutchens broke the Oklahoma single-season record with 23 home runs, even while opposing coaches tried to pitch around her. She also hit .654 with 45 RBI and 70 runs scored. Hutchens did not compete at the high school level much last season while playing with Team USA.

OU fans are no strangers to freshman phenoms. Just this past season, freshman catcher Kendall Wells set the NCAA single-season freshman, SEC single-season and OU single-season home run records with 39 while also batting .358. She also broke the NCAA single-season home run record that had stood since 1995, but bad timing had UCLA's Megan Grant crush 42 out the same season to claim the new record (for now).

Wells was the leader in the Sooners chasing their own team record for most homers in a season, and although they surpassed their old mark, UCLA took over the new record with 209 home runs, compared to 187 for Oklahoma. But now when opponents pitch around Wells and send her straight to first, they'll still have to deal with Hutchens, who can set the same level of freshman expectations that Wells just did. But now there's two of them.

The Sooners will return five of nine starters from that potent lineup, as well as Nelly McEnroe-Marinas, who was a starter in 2025 before an injury sidelined her most of last year. That alone made the 2027 Sooners capable of chasing history again, but Hutchens could be the surprise boost for Oklahoma to actually catch that record this time.
