One of the Oklahoma Sooners' few veteran presences at cornerback is headed elsewhere to finish his college football career.

Pete Nakos of On3 reported on Wednesday that OU cornerback Gentry Williams is expected to enter the Transfer Portal when it officially opens on Friday. Despite injuries squandering multiple seasons for him, Williams will have just one year of eligibility left as a redshirt junior in 2025.

Gentry Williams expected to transfer from Oklahoma

After starting all 10 games he appeared in as a sophomore in 2023, Williams barely saw the field the past two seasons because of major injuries. Even in that 2023 season, Williams missed three games because of injury.

In 2024, Williams played in the first two games of the season before suffering a season-ending injury. He then returned this season and started at corner in five of the Sooners' first seven games before another major injury that required surgery sidelined him the rest of the way.

In 28 games at OU, Williams tallied 48 tackles, five tackles for loss and four interceptions, including three in 2023. He got to OU in 2022 as a consensus four-star recruit out of Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa. Williams was the sixth player so far this cycle with intentions to transfer from that 2022 class, which was the first under Brent Venables.

The Sooners are still expected to return both starting corners from this season in sophomore Eli Bowen and freshman Courtland Guillory. However, OU's depth at the position has all of a sudden taken a major hit, especially on Wednesday, with Williams, Devon Jordan and Maliek Hawkins all unveiling expectations to transfer on the same day. Kendel Dolby, who played both cheetah and corner, is also transferring. Other than Jacobe Johnson's two starts last season, no other corner on the Sooners' roster has much, if any, experience.

OU general manager Jim Nagy now first needs to assure Bowen and Guillory don't go anywhere, then hit the portal for the right depth pieces, preferably with experience to help make up the loss of Williams and Dolby.
