Focus on the 2028 recruiting class has just begun, but the Oklahoma Sooners are already close to adding their first commit to get things really going the same way they did with their 2027 group.
With Division-I football coaches as of Monday able to contact 2028 prospects via text, email and social media, interior offensive lineman Gavin Wilson has apparently already made up his mind even before his recruitment really heats up. Rivals national recruiting expert Sam Spiegelman recently logged an expert prediction for Wilson to commit to OU to be the Sooners' first 2028 commit to (hopefully) actually stick.

The Sooners had already landed one commitment from the 2028 class, but it's hard to take most decisions serious that early. Micah Rhodes, a consensus top-10 running back in the class, pledged to the Sooners extremely early in January, but that lasted just barely two months before he changed his mind after OU running backs coach DeMarco Murray left for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Now, although many fans aren't confident in any commitment until signing day nowadays, 2028 decisions actually have more grip when they're made.
Wilson has already visited OU twice, including earlier this month. That last time in Norman on June 5 was when Wilson picked up his offer from the Sooners. He also already holds offers from Baylor, Kansas State, LSU, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Purdue, North Texas and Tulsa.
Those early visits and the fact Wilson is from right here in Oklahoma out of Bixby High School, which also just produced 2027 five-star offensive lineman commit Kaeden Penny, instills further confidence that Wilson will ultimately be a Sooner no matter how soon he commits. Penny will be right next to Wilson all season to assure choosing OU was the right choice.

Rivals ranks Wilson, listed at 6-foot-2 and 255 pounds, as the No. 19 interior offensive lineman in the 2028 class and No. 7 overall player in the state of Oklahoma.

Last August, offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh also knocked over the first domino to fall for the Sooners' 2027 class when three-star offensive tackle Luke Wilson, even with the same last name, became OU's first 2027 commit. Before you knew it, less than a year later, the Sooners' 2027 group includes 25 total commits, one of which is still Wilson, and is the No. 3 class in college football.
Gavin Wilson, like Luke, certainly won't end up being the headliner of the Sooners' 2028 haul, but he could be the one to lead yet another top class to Norman.
