Oklahoma men’s basketball coach Porter Moser just used the latest college sports roster chaos to add not one, but possibly two starters to the Sooners’ lineup within a week.

On3’s Joe Tipton reported on Wednesday that former Villanova big man Duke Brennan has committed to the Sooners to play the fifth season that he was just recently given because of a federal judge ruling in response to the NCAA’s new 5-in-5 eligibility rule that gave athletes five seasons to participate instead of four. Brennan then confirmed the news himself with a post on X.

Just last week, OU also added former SMU guard B.J. Edwards, who was in the same situation. Both he and Brennan could be in the Sooners’ starting 5 when they take the court for the 2026-27 season.

This 5-in-5 ruling over the summer was a headache for most of college sports, but has been a massive blessing for Moser. He suddenly has a roster full of talent and experience that seems poised to make the NCAA Tournament after the Sooners have missed the Big Dance in four of five seasons under Moser.

Harnessing this roster chaos could end up saving Moser his job after new athletic director Roger Denny gave him a lifeline for one more year with more resources to succeed. Moser is obviously putting those resources to good use if now he can just get this talent to execute on the court.

Regardless of how he got to Norman, Brennan could be the Sooners’ most impactful transfer addition of the offseason as a star on both ends of the floor.

Brennan, listed at 6-foot-10, just finished his lone season at Villanova, where he earned Third-Team All-Big East honors. He started 32 games, averaging a double-double with 12.4 points and 10.3 rebounds a game. He was the first Villanova player since Harold Pressley in 1985-86 to average at least 10 boards a game in a season.

Before getting to Villanova, Brennan spent two seasons at Grand Canyon and started his career at Arizona State in 2022. He was named Second-Team All-WAC and to the WAC All-Defensive Team in 2024-25 before heading to Villanova.

Adding Brennan presumably nixes one of Moser’s biggest consistent roster issues of lacking a dominant big man, especially since joining the SEC. Now, the Sooners have two legit options to start at center after also adding former G League player Akoldah Gak, listed at 6-foot-11, earlier in the offseason. There’s also the option of putting both on the floor at the same time for a towering lineup.

Those big men are then paired with an experienced group of guards between Edwards, Texas A&M transfer Pop Isaacs and returning starter Xzayvier Brown.

For the first time since the Sooners joined the SEC, OU fans can suddenly be confident in a roster that Moser has assembled.
