It's only April, and it continues to be pointed out how much talent the Oklahoma Sooners have for 2026, but all that does for the next five months is set the expectations head coach Brent Venables needs to meet this upcoming season.
Within the same week David Pollack on his podcast praised the talent the Sooners have returning, particularly along the offensive line, On3's J.D. PicKell also listed OU as one of his top-10 most talented rosters in college football for the 2026 season.
J.D. PicKell considers Sooners a top-10 roster and that leaves no excuses for Brent Venables
PicKell ranked OU as the No. 10 most talented roster behind Ohio State, Georgia, Texas, Oregon, Notre Dame, LSU, Miami, Texas A&M and Texas Tech, respectively. He also listed Lincoln Riley's USC as an honorable mention.
The top 10 most talented rosters in CFB. I appreciate everyone agreeing here.

PicKell's ranking wasn't entirely based on opinion, but that was the biggest influence in the Sooners being considered that high. He used data from programs' last three high school recruiting classes and their most recent transfer class. The Sooners didn't crack the top 10 in any used metrics, but PicKell believed OU's talent is undervalued for a team that just went 10-3 and made the College Football Playoff.
The Sooners return 65% of their production from 2025, according to ESPN. Most of that is on the offensive side with 75%, compared to 55% defensively. There's no denying the defense carried the team last season, but PicKell particularly has faith in a more healthy John Mateer at quarterback and has high hopes for new wide receiver Parker Livingstone, who transferred from Texas.

Pollack agreed with PicKell that the talent is certainly there for the Sooners and experience is what stalled the offense last season with three freshmen starting up front, which is where Pollack noted seeing a lot of talent between left tackle Michael Fasusi and center Jake Maikkula.
These are all opinions, but they came from unbiased perspectives that have proven to know ball. The fact is: Venables has a talented roster for 2026. Although there are other factors, especially with three teams from PicKell's ranking on OU's schedule, talent carries the most weight in a team having a successful season and in setting the standard.
Venables, unlike last year, is not on the hot seat heading into this season, but after raising the standard and now having no excuses, this roster creates a playoff-or-bust expectation for the Sooners that Venables must meet.
