Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables just gave hope for a quicker Kip Lewis return.
Lewis, OU’s starting WILL linebacker, played only 10 snaps against Michigan because of a non-contact knee injury he suffered on the Wolverines’ first possession of the game. The immediate outlook wasn’t promising, but during his coach’s show on Monday, Venables gave a much more positive update.
“We got some good news there,” Venables said. “He’ll be back sooner than maybe we initially thought, so that’s awesome.”

Venables sounded a lot more positive there than he did in his update during Saturday’s postgame press conference immediately after the Sooners’ loss to Michigan. At that point, it seemed like Lewis would for sure miss multiple games during the toughest part of OU’s schedule.
“He'll miss some time," Venables said then.
There’s still no timeframe, but Venables’ most recent update seems to at least rule out a season-ending injury. Considering Lewis will likely miss at least the next game against New Mexico on Saturday, the ideal situation would be that he’s back in time for the Sooners’ trip to Athens to play No. 2 Georgia in Week 4.
After that, the Sooners get a bye week. Even if Lewis is sidelined against Georgia, that bye week could help with his return for the Red River Rivalry against Texas on Oct. 10. Those Georgia and Texas matchups are definitely when the Sooners will need Lewis the most.
At least leading up to those SEC contests, we will get a daily availability report to update Lewis' status starting on Wednesday. That won't be the case this week, though, with a non-conference matchup.
Kip Lewis' return is crucial for Sooners' success in big-time SEC games
It was clear OU’s linebacker corps was not up to its usual standard without Lewis out there. That should have been expected, though, since Lewis is the heartbeat of the defense as a fifth-year senior and team captain.
Lewis is not only the most experienced linebacker on OU’s roster with 32 career starts, but he’s also the Sooners’ best tackler. He led the team with 76 total tackles last season, while also adding 10.5 TFL, four sacks, four pass breakups, five QB hurries and a forced fumble to the stat sheet.
However long Lewis is out, junior James Nesta is expected to fill in for him at the WILL linebacker spot. Nesta appeared in every game last season, but mostly on special teams. This is his first season as a real contributor on defense, with Saturday’s game against New Mexico likely being his first career start.
Last week while stepping up for Lewis, Nesta had three total tackles. He had four tackles against UTEP in Week 1, plus recovered a fumble.
Michigan transfer Cole Sullivan could also help fill Lewis’ void if he’s not needed in his usual spot of cheetah / extra SAM linebacker. If Venables goes with a smaller unit, Sullivan could start at WILL, with Reggie Powers III out there at cheetah.
More responsibility also falls on Owen Heinecke. He’s the usual starter at MIKE, but without Lewis, he’ll have a bigger leadership role and will need to wrangle in a lot more tackles to pick up some slack. He led the team with 10 tackles on Saturday.
The Sooners need Lewis back ASAP, though. Nesta and Sullivan will be fine against New Mexico, but Lewis’ experience is irreplaceable, especially in an environment like Georgia or the Red River Rivalry. The Sooners will also need their defense to be at its best if the offense consistently performs as it did against Michigan.
Lewis is on the way back, and thankfully, it’s even sooner than expected.
