The Oklahoma Sooners' first half against the Michigan Wolverines could not have gone any worse, including losing the heartbeat of their defense.
OU starting linebacker Kip Lewis hobbled off the field at The Big House during the Wolverines' first possession of the game, and it doesn't look like the Sooners will have him the rest of the day. OU trailed Michigan 10-0 at halftime despite the expectation to dominate, so a team captain like Lewis being on the field is vital in mounting a second-half comeback.
Chris Plank reported during OU's radio broadcast that Lewis injured his knee. The staff put a brace on his knee, and he was seen running on the sidelines before briefly going back out there, but before the Sooners headed to the locker room, Lewis was wearing street clothes on the sideline. The FOX broadcast confirmed just before the third quarter that Lewis is "done for the day."

James Nesta forced to step up for Kip Lewis
Lewis has 32 career starts under his belt in five seasons with the Sooners. He led OU with 76 total tackles in 2025. He also recorded 10.5 for loss, four sacks, four pass breakups, five QB hurries and a forced fumble. Last week in his 2026 debut against UTEP, Lewis posted three tackles and 0.5 TFL.
There's no sugarcoating this is a catastrophic loss for the Sooners at the absolute worst time. Many would say losing the starting quarterback would be the most consequential loss during a game, but given how John Mateer has played so far, many OU fans might even argue that losing Lewis is even worse.
The best hope at this point is that this injury won't sideline Lewis long-term. The Sooners host New Mexico next week, so Lewis' presence won't be dire then, but after that, OU travels to play No. 2 Georgia. The Sooners then get a bye week before the Red River Rivalry against Texas.
James Nesta has stepped up at the WILL linebacker spot in place of Lewis. The junior appeared in every game last season, primarily on special teams. He had a bigger role on the defense for the first time last week and had four tackles. He had four tackles all of the 2025 season.
Don't expect OU head coach Brent Venables to give much of an update on Lewis' status after Saturday's game.
