A pair of rising 2028 in-state receivers are still waiting on Jim Nagy's OU offer

There are some rising 2028 wide receiver prospects in the Sooner State who are still waiting on their chance from their home state Sooners, and it’s not that they haven’t earned it.

King Underwood and Kenyon Sweat are both in-state products who have recently started a climb up recruiting rankings, but still haven’t gotten an OU offer despite already having opportunities from other Power 4 programs. General manager Jim Nagy has a knack for jumping on talent early, but so far while assembling the 2028 class, he’s been behind on a few prospects in the Sooners’ own backyard. If Nagy doesn't give at least one of these local products an offer soon, then they likely leave the Sooner State.

Most OU fans agree that there are few things more infuriating than a recruit from Oklahoma leaving the state and becoming a star somewhere else. If there’s ever a player to offer early and maybe even risk a gamble on, it’s the ones who already call the Sooner State home.

In-state talent has been the foundation of the Sooners having a top-5 2027 recruiting class so far. It’s also been a historically great crop of talent from Oklahoma, with three players who have earned five-star status at some point during the cycle. That obviously goes a long ways in the Sooners having one of the best classes in the country by using homegrown talent, but it’s also a rare occurrence. A state like Oklahoma just doesn’t produce elite talent at that level that often consistently.

Regardless, there’s still plenty of 2028 talent within Oklahoma’s borders that should stay within those boundaries, starting with Underwood and Sweat.

According to SoonerScoop’s Parker Thune, Sweat has a visit to OU scheduled for Sept. 19, when the Sooners host New Mexico, but still no offer on the table. He’s an insanely fast receiver from Cache High School that’s earned three-star status and is considered the No. 54 receiver in the 2028 class, based on the 247Sports Composite. His offers include Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Texas Tech, Iowa State and UConn.

Underwood has a long list of visits planned but none of the stops are down the road in Norman. 247Sports’ Collin Kennedy reported that this season Underwood will visit Oklahoma State, Duke, Arizona State, Arkansas, Tulane and Tennessee, which was his first FBS offer.

Underwood is ranked as the No. 23 athlete in the class while staring at both wide receiver and defensive back for Piedmont High School. He has the exact build the Sooners need at both spots, listed at a towering 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds heading into his junior campaign. He also excels in basketball and track & field at Piedmont.

The fact Sweat and Underwood play receiver makes it even more vital that the Sooners get them to Norman if they’re worth it. It’s a well-noted problem the Sooners struggle with keeping wide receiver talent after signing them as high schoolers. If Underwood and Sweat are already home, it’s a lot more likely they’ll always be a Sooner.

Nagy has proven he and his staff should be trusted when it comes to finding and evaluating talent, but this in-state receiver duo is a rare occurrence that leaves you wondering what the Sooners are waiting for before they leave Oklahoma.
