4 teams Oklahoma fans need to hate watch Week 11 to benefit the Sooners’ CFP chances

There's still plenty of rooting Sooner Nation needs to do without OU playing.

The Oklahoma Sooners are off this week, but with the College Football Playoff picture more clear than ever, there’s still plenty for Sooner Nation to keep an eye on Week 11 throughout college football.

The Sooners are on the CFP bubble after being No. 12 in the first rankings that were released on Tuesday. If the season ended today, OU would be the second team left out of the 12-team field.

Winning out would likely solidify OU’s spot in the playoff, but nothing is ever certain considering the committee making those decisions. There are teams the Sooners need to lose this week to make the committee’s decision easier and easier to believe OU deserves a seat at the table.

No. 10 Notre Dame

The biggest outrage from the initial CFP rankings was Notre Dame being ahead of OU and Texas despite also having two losses but a much weaker schedule and fewer ranked wins.

Although it’s hard to trust the committee after that decision, a third loss should erase Notre Dame’s playoff chances and no longer make the Fighting Irish a worry for OU. Notre Dame on Saturday hosts Navy, which is 7-1 and just suffered its first loss of the season to North Texas.

The Sooners also eventually need Texas to suffer a third loss, but the Longhorns are idle this week.

No. 8 Texas Tech

Texas Tech’s lone loss to Arizona State might not carry much weight since the Red Raiders were without their starting quarterback, but there’s still no way the committee favors a two-loss Big 12 team over a two-loss SEC squad, especially since the Red Raiders have just one ranked win.

The Red Raiders host No. 7 BYU on Saturday for the biggest game of the week. If BYU wins and stays undefeated, it’s then more likely the Big 12 ends up becoming a one-bid conference and frees up another spot for the Sooners to take. However, if Texas Tech wins, then the Red Raiders and Cougars both could stay ahead of OU with one loss apiece.

No. 9 Oregon

Oregon lost to Indiana 30-20 at home in its only game so far against a team included in the first CFP rankings. The Ducks will get their second try on Saturday against No. 20 Iowa on the road.

If the Ducks go 0-2 against top-25 teams, then the Sooners’ 7-2 record will look a lot prettier than Oregon’s, and it would then be the Ducks getting replaced by one of the weaker conference champions.

No. 3 Texas A&M

Texas A&M winning or losing really doesn’t affect the Sooners’ immediate footing in the CFP race, but it could eventually.

The Aggies travel to No. 22 Missouri on Saturday. The Sooners will host the Tigers on Nov. 22, and OU needs Mizzou to be ranked when it visits Norman to bolster that resume. However, if the Aggies beat the Tigers and hand them their third loss, then that’ll be one less ranked opponent on OU’s remaining slate.
