3 sudden commits give Patty Gasso's Sooners the top 2028 recruiting class in college softball

Not one, not two, but three new 2028 commits for Patty Gasso within the last 24 hours.

The Oklahoma Sooners added commitments from infielders Kate McCartney and Gia Ryan on Monday evening before outfielder Grace Tonga made the same decision on Tuesday afternoon. By Tuesday morning, the two new additions had already propelled the Sooners to having the top recruiting class in college softball, only for Tonga to cushion that lead even more.

Although a few months ago it felt like Gasso’s kingdom was crumbling after the Sooners missed the Women’s College World Series for the first time in nine years, it’s built on an unshakable foundation of elite talent. This latest recruiting class also being destined to be the best just proves the dynasty isn't close to being over.

Kate McCartney, Gia Ryan and Grace Tonga have Oklahoma headed to another No. 1 recruiting class

McCartney is the highest-ranked prospect from the trio as the No. 6 overall player and No. 3 middle infielder as a five-star recruit, according to Rivals and On3. She's also the No. 2 prospect from California, which is Gasso's home state and somewhere she finds talent regularly. Her primary position is shortstop.

Ryan is considered the No. 6 middle infielder in the class and also comes from California as the No. 5 player in the state. She's also the No. 22 national prospect.

The Sooners plucked Tonga right out of Oklahoma State's own backyard from Stillwater High School. She's the No. 8 player in the state of Oklahoma and No. 16 outfielder in the class. She's a versatile player who can also play in the infield and will add a powerful bat to the lineup.

OU will now keep at least two local products home in the Sooner State. Middle infielder BP Saenz, from Moore High School, was the Sooners' first addition to the class. She's the No. 3 player in the state and No. 41 national player.

The Sooners' 2028 class is now up to five pledges, and all have come during the month of September since Gasso hosted a solid group of targets at OU football's season opener on Sept. 4. Saenz made her decision just three days later.

Visitors that weekend also included Ryan, McCartney and righty Sophia Schlader, who committed to the Sooners last week as the No. 1 pitcher in the 2028 class. Schlader, from Iowa, chose the Sooners after narrowing her options between OU and Texas for a Red River Rivalry win that should eventually result in victories over the Longhorns on the field.

Even more commits are likely on the way, including maybe from Caelyn Campos, who's the top outfielder in the same class and also visited OU that same weekend. She would also grow that California-to-Norman pipeline.

That puts Gasso on track to assemble her third No. 1 recruiting class in the last five cycles. The rest of the college softball world might be dreaming of a downfall, but the Sooners aren't going anywhere.
