There's officially fantasy football in college football.

Yahoo Sports announced on Thursday that it's becoming the only major platform to offer fantasy football at the college level after the game has taken over the NFL for years. Yahoo offered college fantasy football once before but discontinued it in 2021. Now, it's back and seems to have more support than ever before to stick around.

The college version will be similar to the NFL format we're familiar with, but with the addition of a new "Team Offense" position to reward efficient offenses, even when backups are in during blowouts, and slight tweaks to scoring. There's also no kicker, so sorry, Tate Sandell.

The pool of players will come from Power Four programs, plus Notre Dame. That obviously includes the Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners were somewhat sluggish at times on offense last season so you likely want to avoid drafting them as your "Team Offense" for now, but there are still OU players you will want on your first college fantasy football team this year.

Draft guides will eventually come out to confirm more, but considering the negativity surrounding quarterback John Mateer, he will likely be a late-round selection. But that opens up the opportunity to grab the steal of the draft if Mateer accomplishes the turnaround his offseason points to.

Mateer can be next level as a fantasy QB because of his rushing ability, which anyone that plays fantasy football knows is valuable. Before breaking his thumb last year, Mateer recorded at least one rushing and passing TD in his first four games. He found the end zone with his legs twice against a stout Michigan defense.

There was then a drop-off in Mateer's overall production after his injury. Now healthy again, if Mateer returns to that Heisman Trophy contender he was early on in 2025, or is even better, he could carry your team as a late-round pick.

With NFL great Jason Witten now leading the position, the Sooners completely overhauled their tight ends over the offseason, which included adding Rocky Beers from Colorado State and two others through the transfer portal. From a fantasy perspective, though, Beers is the best bet since Hayden Hansen was mostly brought in to bolster the run blocking.

Last season, Beers, listed at a towering 6-foot-5, set a Colorado State single-season tight end record with seven touchdown catches. He should remain a top red-zone target in Norman for Mateer, and if he even sniffs the success he had in 2025, he could be a weekly starter at TE.

It's also worth noting that in his first season after converting from linebacker to tight end, Jaren Kanak was one of the most productive tight ends in college football early last year for the Sooners so the possibility is certainly there in Ben Arbuckle's system.

With head coach Brent Venables back in control, the Sooners had one of the best defenses in college football last season. They lost a lot of talent, especially when it comes to getting to the opposing quarterback, but OU's defense will once again be one of the best in the country in 2026.

The only knock on the Sooners' defense is that they failed to force a lot of turnovers last season, which is ultimately what creates massive fantasy weeks for D/ST units. Some of that was just bad luck, especially early, so that number should increase in 2026.
