3 creampuffs that will give Sooners merciful extra bye weeks in 2025

These weeks off will be nice.

There's nothing wrong with taking a break sometimes.

The Oklahoma Sooners' 2025 football schedule looks to be one of the toughest in the country, but they at least have three weak opponents that can serve as three bonus bye weeks. Outside of an SEC gauntlet, OU gets four nonconference games, with one being a big-time primetime matchup with the Michigan Wolverines Week 2. The other three, though, are creampuffs that can give the Sooners an extra week to rest, figure things out or get back on track if needed.

Oklahoma's 3 weakest 2025 opponents

vs. Illinois State (Aug. 30)

Most programs like to kick off a season against a cupcake, especially for a team like the Sooners that will be debuting a new offensive system under Ben Arbuckle. Illinois State is the perfect starter for Arbuckle to figure out the kinks after fall camp.

Illinois State went an impressive 10-4 last season, but against FCS competition. The Redbirds' only FBS opponent in 2024 was Iowa, and they lost 40-0 against an offense that was much worse than what OU's should be this year.

at Temple (Sept. 13)

Temple was OU's opener last season, and even the Sooners' eventual historically bad offense looked like one Baker Mayfield controlled as they won 51-3. The Owls ended up going 3-9.

The 2025 meeting will be in Philadelphia instead of Norman, but that won't effect the outcome at all.

vs. Kent State (Oct. 4)

Kent State might have been the worst football team in all of FBS last season after going 0-12. The Golden Flashes couldn't get any worse, but also don't expect them to be much better in 2025.

The Sooners will get a bye week after their SEC opener against Auburn, then host Kent State. That's the perfect time for OU to work on and implement anything it installed during the bye week. That also basically gives OU back-to-back bye weeks before a stretch against seven straight top-25 teams based on ESPN's FPI.
