Sugar Bowl (6-2)

1949: Oklahoma 14 North Carolina 6

1950: Oklahoma 35 LSU 0

Following the 1949 season, Oklahoma won its second straight Sugar Bowl and finished the year 11-0, but it wasn’t enough to claim the national championship. The Sooners would have to wait one more year to do that for the first time.

1951: Kentucky 13 Oklahoma 7

Despite losing the Sugar Bowl, the Sooners were named the national champions after a 10-1 season.

1972: Oklahoma 40 Auburn 22

1972: Oklahoma 14 Penn State 0

For the second straight season, Oklahoma found itself in the Sugar Bowl with just one win on its record, and both times missed out on a national championship despite winning the game. In 1971 and 1972, Oklahoma finished at No. 2 in the AP Poll.

The 1972 Sugar Bowl was Chuck Fairbanks’ final game as the head coach of the Sooners and opened the door for Barry Switzer to take over and lead Oklahoma to three national championships in his 16-year tenure in Norman.

2004: LSU 21 Oklahoma 14

2014: Oklahoma 45 Alabama 31

In the final season before the introduction of the College Football Playoff, Oklahoma finished sixth in the AP Poll after beating 11-1 No. 3 Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. The defending national champion Crimson Tide just missed out on the BCS Championship game because of a loss to Auburn in the Iron Bowl.

Trevor Knight threw for 348 yards and four touchdowns in the game.
