In his postgame press conference following the Oklahoma football victory over No. 3 Texas on Saturday, Longhorns’ head coach Steve Sarkisian figuratively tipped his hat to the Sooners on the “hard-fought” win before tempering the praise by saying, “we did not play our best game.”

Although that statement was probably accurate, the same could probably also be said about Oklahoma. Dillon Gabriel had strong numbers and made a number of clutch plays, including the game-winning touchdown pass to Nic Anderson with 15 seconds remaining in the game, he misfired on several passes that would have extended drives and only completed 62 percent of his passes and OU special teams left a lot to be desired in the game.

It’s true that the Sooners did not beat themselves like Texas did in committing three turnovers, giving up five quarterback sacks and getting penalized nine times for 70 yards. But to imply that OU played its best game and Texas didn’t is an erroneous inference.

In a nutshell, the Sooners made plays when they needed to, and the Longhorns didn’t. And you can credit the much-improved Oklahoma defense for the latter.

The lingering question of how much improved is the Oklahoma defense this season over last was resoundly answered in the Cotton Bowl on Saturday. The 2023 Sooner defense definitely has Brent Venables’ handprint on it.

In sum, it was a terrific win for the Sooners and a marquee victory for the Oklahoma head coach who has received much criticism for OU’s disappointing 6-7 record and defensive collapse in his inaugural season at the helm of the Sooner program.

Here is some of the social media reaction of Oklahoma’s Red River Rivalry win over the weekend and fifth in the last six games against Texas:
