A year ago, in Brent Venables first true Oklahoma football recruiting class, picked up considerable momentum in the June-July-August time frame and ended up signing a top-five recruiting class nationally.
The Sooners are on their way to delivering a second consecutive top-10 class in the 2024 recruiting cycle, and once again Oklahoma closed on the competition with a heavy push during the summer months.
While it may seem the Sooners take a lot longer to lock down recruiting prospects than they have previously or more recently under Lincoln Riley, that is largely by design and a reflection of Venables philosophy on the recruiting process.
The Oklahoma head coach wants players who ultimately commit to OU to be 100 percent sold on their decision, which, to Venables, means that when they say they are coming to Oklahoma they are through with any other school visits. If a recruit still wants to visit other schools, Venables does not want him to commit to the Sooners until he is good and ready to do so.
As a case in point, Oklahoma’s 2024 class currently includes 23 commitments. Seventeen of those commitments have come since June 20, and the Sooners are hopeful of landing a few more top targets to fill out the class and then, of course, signing all of their commitments during the early signing period in December.
Three recruiting announcements that are expected over the next month involve prospects that Oklahoma would really like to have and would likely move the Sooners up further in the class rankings.
Four-star defensive line prospect Danny Okoye, rated by 247Sports as the No. 3 player in the state of Oklahoma and the No, 23 edge rusher in the class nationally, is expected to announce his school choice on Sept. 20. The Sooners are believed to be the favorites to land Okoye.
A couple of other elite 2024 prospects the Sooners are very high on are four-star linebacker Michael Boganowski and four-star offensive lineman Grant Brix. Both are reportedly set to announce in the next several weeks.
Boganowski is from Junction City, Kansas. He is the No, 1 player in the state of Kansas and ranked as the No. 34 linebacker in the class, according to the 247Sports Composite. Brix is from Logan, Iowa. He is the No. 1 player in the state of Iowa, the No. 5 offensive tackle and the No. 62 player overall nationally, according to the 247Sports Composite.
Boganowski is considering among OU, Kansas State, Kansas and Florida State. Brix has offers from Nebraska, Kansas State, OU, Alabama, and Iowa among others.
Oklahoma’s 2024 recruiting class is currently ranked 7th by Rivals, 8th by 247Sports and No. 9 by On3.
