It’s been a couple of days since the Oklahoma football program wrapped up its major summer recruiting event calendar with the “Party at the Palace” for uncommitted 2024 recruiting targets.

On Tuesday, the Sooners earned their second commitment from a prospect that was in attendance at that weekend event.

Three-star QB Brendan Zubrugg flipped his commitment to Northwestern and committed to Oklahoma as a member of the 2024 class. Zurbrugg had committed to Northwestern on June 26 but after the dismissal of Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald amid hazing allegations, the 6-foot, 4-inch QB prospect elected to reopen his recruiting.

Zurbrugg, from Alliance, Ohio, is the 18th commitment to Oklahoma’s 2024 class and the second in as many days. He is the second QB commit in the class, joining Michael Hawkins, who was the Sooners; first 2024 commitment. Four-star safety Mykel Patterson-McDonald, from nearby Oklahoma City, announced his commitment to the Sooners on Monday.

Zurbrugg’s first and only visit to the Oklahoma campus was this past weekend. “I learned a lot about the culture coach Venables is building and the opportunities he gives players,” he told 247Sports. It was the culture that stood out the most to him, said Zurbrugg.

His junior season at Alliance High School, Zurbrugg completed 152 of 202 passes for 2,184 yards and 23 touchdowns.

After the debacle against Texas in last season’s Red River Rivalry game, Brent Venables and his coaching staff have vowed not to allow themselves to enter a game without a legitimate backup quarterback. They signed five-star Gatorade National Player of the Year Jackson Arnold in the 2023 class, have two quarterback commits in the 2024 class and a QB committed already in the 2025 class (Kevin Sperry).

With several more commitments expected before the end of August, Oklahoma continues to advance upward in the 2024 recruiting team rankings. The Sooners are up to No. 14 in the 247Sports team rankings, 13 in the Rivals recruiting rankings and 16th, according to On3.
