Four-star safety Mykel Patterson-McDonald became the 17th commitment in the 2024 Oklahoma football recruiting class on Monday.
The 5-foot, 11-inch, 175-pound defensive back from nearby Moore, Oklahoma, was widely projected to commit to the Sooners, leaving little surprise when he did so.
Patterson-McDonald’s commitment could be very important for OU. He is a close friend of five-star defensive lineman David Stone, who is a top Oklahoma target and is scheduled to announce his commitment on Aug. 27.
At Westmoore High School in Oklahoma City, Patterson-McDonald recorded 108 tackles eight pass-breakups and three interceptions in his junior season a year ago.

Rivals lists the four-star safety as the No. 3 player in the state of Oklahoma. He is also the second in-state prospect to commit to the Sooners for 2024. He joins Jaydan Hardy of Lewisville, Texas, as the second safety to commit to the Sooners’ 2024 class.
“They (the Oklahoma coaches) stayed in contact with me,” Patterson-McDonald told The Oklahoman. “If it wasn’t one coach, it was another coach. Every time they brought me out on campus, they made me feel at home.”
Patterson-McDonald said Oklahoma’s move to the SEC was also a major factor in his decision to play football at OU.
Patterson-McDonald is a legacy commitment to Sooner football. His father, Larry McDonald walked on to the OU program in 2009. The younger McDonald chose Oklahoma over offers from UNLV, Houston, Missouri and others.
The next major 2024 announcement for Sooner fans will be that of five-star D-lineman Williams Nwaneri, who is set to reveal his commitment decision on Aug. 7
