Buoyed by national championships in softball and women’s gymnastics finished in the top 25 of the 2022-23 Directors’ Cup standings.
The Sooners athletic programs finished the 2022-23 academic year with a total of 813.75 points, good for 23rd place among NCAA Division I schools in the Director’s Cup standings. It is the 20th time in the last 23 years that Oklahoma athletics has finished in the top 25.
Oklahoma won the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championship in April for the second straight year and sixth time in the last nine, and the Sooner softball squad finished off one of the greatest seasons in the history of college softball with a third consecutive Women’s College World Series title and the team’s fifth national title in the sport in the last seven years.
Both national championships were worth 100 points of OU’s overall total.
Stanford finished first in this year’s Directors’ Cup standings, something the Cardinal have done 26 times in the 29-year history of the award. Oklahoma archrival Texas finished second, followed by Ohio State, Virginia and Florida.
The SEC, which Oklahoma and Texas will be part of beginning in 2024-25, led all conferences with eight current teams finishing in the top 25 and four in the top 10.
The Directors’ Cup scoring system is based on NCAA Championship finishes in 19 sports, four of which must be women’s volleyball and basketball and men’s basketball and baseball. The next highest (with a maximum of 15) sports are scored for each school, regardless of gender, and are factored into the total score.
