Oklahoma softball: Where does Patty Gasso rank on the all-time college sports coaching debate?
By Brandon Self
Patty Gasso – Oklahoma Softball
Oklahoma softball giant Patty Gasso is the greatest softball coach ever, and there’s no debating that. In her career, she’s won 1,456 games and only lost 345 (80-percent win percentage). She’s won 9 Big 12 tournament championships, 15 regular season Big 12 titles, and 7 National Championships, including the last three straight.
Coach Gasso has been named the Big 12’s Coach of the Year 15 times! Her staff has won a total of 15 Coaching Staff of the Year Awards. No college softball program comes remotely close to Coach Gasso and her Sooners.
So, where does she rank on the all-time list? Is she in the top-5? Top 10? I still don’t know where to put her. Such a complicated debate. So, here’s my final answer.
I put her at 6. I think she’s the 6th ranked college coach in the history of collegiate athletics. That’s up there. I think she beats Coach K, Bowden, and the like. She’s dominant, and her program is unmatched in college softball. The great news, though, is that she’s not done. Her run of dominance will continue for years. She will only continue to climb the list, and she will finish top-5 before she’s done.
Okay, there… that was my softball article. Debate the list. Let me know what you think. Is she too low? Too high? Do you think she should be #1 overall? I’m sure some of you do. Let me know on Twitter at @BrandonSelf77 and @StorminInNorman. I’d love to debate this issue because it’s amazing we get to have the debate in the first place.
On a final note. Congratulations to the Oklahoma Sooners Softball team. What they’ve accomplished is amazing, regardless of what sport it is. They’ve dominated the college softball world with apparent ease… and they’re nowhere close to being done.
