Oklahoma golf: Sooner men finish 2nd in NCAA Norman Regional
By Chip Rouse
The 9th-ranked men’s Oklahoma golf team finished second in the NCAA Norman Regional and advanced to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship May 26-31 at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The Sooners shot a 54-hole score of 25-under-par 839, three strokes back of regional champion Alabama. Colorado (-23, 839) captured third, Texas Tech (-22, 840), the top seed in the Norman Regional, was fourth and Duke shined on the final day, shooting nine-under 275 in the final round to finish at 21-under, 843 and capture the fifth and final spot in the regional round to move on to the NCAA Championship.
Oklahoma was led by sophomore Drew Goodman and junior Ben Lorenz, who finished second and third, respectively, on the individual leaderboard in the Norman Regional. Goodman tied with the second-best score of the opening round (five under par 66) and finished with a 54-hole total of 13-under 203. Lorenz had a final round 66 and finished at 10-under 206.
OU senior Patrick Welch tied for 23rd with a 54-hole total of three-under 213.
Oklahoma has not failed to advance out of the regional round of the NCAA Golf Championship since 2010, the second longest active streak in the country. The Sooners own two national championships trophies in men’s golf (1989 and 2017) as well as a runner-up finish in 2021, losing out to Pepperdine in the match-play championship 3 and 2.
Five teams out of the six regional host sites advance to the NCAA Championships, which begin nine days from now. OU was eliminated in the NCAA Championship quarterfinal round a year ago, dropping a 3 and 2 decision in match play to Arizona State.
