By Brandon Self
Former Sooner hooper Trae Young adds to his ever-growing NBA legacy with an impressive 4th quarter performance last night against the Boston Celtics in the NBA playoffs.
NBA Playoffs – Game 5 – Hawks trail Celtics 3-1
Trae’s Hawks trailed the Celtics 3-1 in the first round of the NBA playoffs Tuesday night in Atlanta. The game started off tightly contested, with the Hawks trailing the Celtics at half 66-58. As the Hawks came out in the third, they kept the game competitive with consistent defense and multiple mid-range jumpers, something the Hawks were consistent at during the regular season. Entering the fourth quarter, the Hawks found themselves trailing by 10 (92-82)… then Ice Trae struck again.
Trae scored 16 points in the fourth quarter against the Celtics, including hitting the game-winning three to seal the Hawks’ victory and extend the first-round NBA playoff series. Out of those 16 fourth-quarter points, Trae scored the Hawks’ final 14 in a row.
Following his 30-foot game-winning three, Trae ended his night with 38 points and 13 assists, plus another signature ‘J’ added to his long highlight list.
Following the game, Trae had the following to say regarding his 30-foot game-winner:
"“I just had to trust in what I’ve done my whole life… and that was to shoot with confidence. I’ve been owning the moment my whole life. That’s what I do. I’m not afraid of it; I’ve worked too hard to be afraid of the moment.” – Trae Young."
Trae Young – The Oklahoma Sooner
During Trae’s 2017-2018 year in Norman, he led the Sooners in every offensive category possible. Sooner Nation was blessed to see Trae for just one season, watching the Norman North Timberwolf average 35.4 minutes a night with 27.4 points per game and 8.7 assists per game.
During his lone Sooner season, Trae led the nation in assists, points, points per game, assists per game, and assists percentage. Trae broke Kevin Durant’s freshman Big 12 record for points scored in a season with 848. Trae was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year before being drafted by the Atlanta Hawks with the 5th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. He’s already been selected as a 2-time NBA All-Star for the Hawks.
Stay tuned to Trae’s attempt to add to his NBA legacy as his Hawks take on the Celtics in Game 6 of their first round NBA playoff series on Thursday at 7:30 on TNT.
