The NCAA’s spring transfer portal window closes on Sunday, April 30, and the Oklahoma football Sooners are closing in on a talented player.

Spearman, Texas, wide receiver Brenen Thompson entered the transfer portal this spring by way of the University of Texas. Thompson was recruited to Texas as a composite 4-star receiver in the 2022 class. He received high school All-America honors following his senior year in high school. During his high school career, Thompson gained 2,280 rushing yards for 34 touchdowns, 1,182 passing yards for 15 touchdowns, 1,196 receiving yards for 14 touchdowns, and over 1,500 return yards and five touchdowns during his career, according to TexasSports.com.

While at UT, Thompson saw action in nine games earning only one catch for 32 yards.

Thompson is a lean, athletic receiver known for his speed and versatility. Thompson is seen as a mix between a receiving back and a slot receiver. It is also expected that Thompson could play out of the Sooners’ backfield from time to time. Another potential spot Thompson could excel in for the Sooners would be in the return game.

Many experts feel that Thompson is close to ending his portal recruitment by signing with the Sooners.

Many Sooners fans have wondered where and when the Sooners coaching staff would dip into the transfer portal. Yesterday on the ‘Main Line Podcast,’ the crew speculated which spot the current Sooners roster needed to show out the most at the spring game. The consensus pick was the wide receiver position and they may have been dead on.

With the departure of Marvin Mims to the NFL Draft, the Sooners have a massive hole in their offense at the WR1 spot. Sooner Nation is hopeful a current receiver could fill the void, perhaps Jalil Farooq, Jayden Gibson, or incoming speed demon Jaquaize Pettaway. However, adding a receiver like Thompson to the roster only improves the Sooners’ offensive outlook.
