Oklahoma softball: Sooners’ Grace Lyons earns Big 12 Player of Week honors
By Chip Rouse
Oklahoma softball super senior Grace Lyons, a major contributor to the Sooners’ back-to-back national championships, is the Big 12 Player of the Week.
Lyons follows OU teammate Jayda Coleman in receiving the Big 12’s Player of the Week. Coleman was so honored last week.
The All-Big 12 shortstop missed seven games early in the season due to an illness, but since returning to the lineup on March 17 Lyons has been coming into her own. Her performance in Oklahoma’s three-game sweep of Iowa State this past weekend is a strong sign that the Sooner veteran infielder may be all the way back.
Lyons hit .625 over the three games and slugged a pair of home runs, her third and fourth of the season. She accounted for 11 total bases and scored four runs in OU’s three wins. All four of her home runs this season have come in the eight games since her return.
Her .410 batting average in 24 games ranks 12th in the Big 12 but is seventh best on a top-ranked Oklahoma team that has six players ranked in the top 10 in the conference in hitting. An indication of how good this Sooner team is.
Lyons leads the Big 12, though, in on-base percentage (.667) and slugging percentage (1.375).
Besides the Oklahoma player recognition, the Big 12 also honored Lexi Kilfoyl of Oklahoma State as Pitcher of the Week in the conference.
Lyons and her OU teammates face a big challenge this weekend when they host No. 8 Texas, the team the Sooners beat in the Women’s College World Series last season for the national championship.
