Oklahoma basketball: Sooners storm to senior day blowout of TCU
By Chip Rouse
Playing its final home game in what has been a frustrating season, the men’s Oklahoma basketball left little doubt from the opening tip in posting a wire-to-wire 74-60 win on Saturday over No. 22 TCU.
It was a huge regular season-ending victory for a Sooner team that has been Jekyll-and-Hyding it all season. Oklahoma had lost to TCU by 27 points earlier in the season, but the Sooners turned the tables with a double-digit turnabout at Lloyd Noble Center on Saturday.
Oklahoma closes out the regular season winning two of its final three games, all against ranked Big 12 teams, and both wins were by double digits.
Grant Sherfield and Tanner Groves combined for 43 of OU’s 74 points, with the super senior Groves leading the way with a game-high 23 points. It was Groves’ highest point total of the season and one below his high-water mark in two seasons at Oklahoma.
The Sooners stormed out to a 20-4 advantage in the first seven minutes of the game and led by as many as 24 points late in the first half.
OU led 38-21 at the half. The Horned Frogs got as close as a dozen points but no closer in the second half. TCU scored 13 of the final 18 points to make the final score appear closer than the game actually was.
The Sooners shot 50 percent for the game (25 of 50) and outrebounded TCU 40-26 despite being the worst rebounding team in the Big 12. OU’s season-long problem with ball security continued in this game. The Sooners committed 13 turnovers to just five by TCU, but the Horned Frogs, a team that thrives on playing fast and getting out on quickly in transition, were not able to capitalize on the Oklahoma errors.
Oklahoma ends the regular season with a 15-16 record overall and 5-13 in the Big 12. TCU falls to 20-11 and 9-9 in the conference. The 60 points scored by TCU were the third lowest point total of the season by the Horned Frogs, who have averaged 76 points a game this season.
The Sooners will be the 10 seed in the Big 12 Tournament next week in Kansas City.
