Oklahoma basketball: Sooner women surrender first place in loss to Red River rivals
By Chip Rouse
The Oklahoma basketball women scored just 14 total points in the second and fourth quarters combined, and that pretty much told the story in a blowout 65-47 loss to 19th-ranked Texas.
A sellout crowd was on hand at Lloyd Noble Center to see the two top teams in the Big 12 battle it out for sole possession of first place. The first quarter ended in a 17-17 deadlock.
The Sooners took a 19-17 lead early in the second period on a basket by Liz Scott, but OU managed just four more points the rest of the quarter, missing 11 of 12 shots. The Sooners were fortunate that the Longhorns scored just 10 points themselves, and Texas took a 27-23 lead into intermission.
Texas widened its advantage to 40-32 six minutes into the third quarter. The Longhorns went on an 11-0 run over the next three minutes and effectively put the game away. The Sooner trailed 51-37 entering the final quarter, and another cold shooting spell in the fourth quarter allowed the Longhorns to stretch their lead and win going away. OU tallied just eight points over the final 10 minutes.

Shaylee Gonzales did most of the damage for Texas, leading the way with a game-high 19 points. She was one of five Lady Longhorns to score in double figures. Liz Scott had 13 points for Oklahoma and was the only Sooner to reach double figures.
OU shot a season-worst 27 percent for the game (15 of 55). While the Sooners were struggling on the offensive end, Texas was lighting up the scoreboard, shooting 47 percent from the field (27 of 57) and 50 percent on three-point tries (5 of 10). The Sooners also shot a season-low percentage from behind the three-point line (14.3 percent, 2 of 14).
The Longhorns made 12 more field goals than Oklahoma.
The largest crowd to see and Oklahoma women’s game since 2013 was on hand at the LNC. Announced attendance was 10,127.
Oklahoma dropped to 12-4 in Big 12 action and 22-5 overall. Next up for the Lady Sooners is senior night at home, hosting Kansas State. Super seniors Madi Williams, Taylor Robertson and Ana Llanusa will be honored after the game.
