Oklahoma football: Mount Rushmore 10 of Sooner GOATS of modern era
By Chip Rouse
No. 2 — DL Lee Roy Selmon
Lee Roy Selmon was one of three Selmon brothers who all played defense on some of the best defensive teams in Oklahoma football history. He anchored the defense on two OU national championship teams (1974 and 1975) and he was named a consensus All-American in both seasons.
Selmon played defensive end at Oklahoma, and former Sooner head coach called him the best football player he ever coached.
"“People just tend to think skilled players are the best players,” Switzer said, “but Lee Roy Selmon was the greatest player I ever had play. He totally dominated his position.”"
In his final season at OU, in 1975, Selmon won both the Outland Trophy as the best interior lineman in college football and the Lombari Award, presented to the college player who best embodies the value and spirit of NFL legendary coach Vince Lombardi.
College Football News ranked Lee Roy, the youngest of the three Selmon brothers (Lucious is the oldest and Dewey the middle brother) the 21st best college player of all time.
Selmon was drafted No. 1 overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1976 NFL Draft. He played nine NFL seasons, all with Tampa Bay.
In 1999, Sports Illustrated named Lee Roy Selmon to the NCAA Football All-Century Team.
He was inducted into both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame and was the first Oklahoma Sooner to be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
