Oklahoma basketball: Taylor Robertson breaks NCAA career 3-point record
By Chip Rouse
Taylor Robertson set a new NCAA career record for three-point shooting, but it wasn’t enough to get the 14th-ranked Sooners a win as OU fell 86-78 at Iowa State on Saturday.
Robertson broke the NCAA career record with her first field-goal attempt of the day and went on to add five more three-pointers on her way to a team-high 25 points. Nevaeh Tot and Madi Williams contributed 14 and 13 points, respectively, but it wasn’t enough to overcome five double-digit Iowa State scorers, led by a game-high 32 points by Ashley Joens, the Big 12’s leading scorer.
The Lady Sooners (16-4, 6-3) jumped out to an 8-0 advantage from the opening tip at Iowa State’s Hilton Coliseum and led by eight, 26-18 after the first 10 minutes. The 18th-ranked Cyclones responded in kind in the second quarter, outscoring Oklahoma 24-16 to send the game to halftime tied at 42.
Iowa State also controlled the third quarter, outscoring the Sooners by nine and taking a 65-56 lead into the final quarter. That third-quarter push proved to be the difference in the game as Oklahoma fell for third time in Big 12 play and dropped to third place in the standings, one game back of Texas and Iowa State.
The Sooners rallied to within three points, 66-63, early in the fourth quarter, but Iowa State was able to hold them off for the final eight minutes to preserve the home victory.
OU and Iowa State split the season series. Oklahoma won the first game 82-79 in Norman.
With six made three-pointers in the game, Robertson’s career total and new NCAA record is now at 503. She is also the active career leader in three-point percentage (44 percent). The previous three-point record was 497 set by Kelsy Mitchell of Ohio State.
The next action for the Oklahoma women will be Tuesday night at home hosting TCU. The Sooners are at home all week. They will follow up TCU with another home game Saturday against West Virginia.
