Oklahoma basketball: Taylor Robertson ties NCAA record in Sooner loss
By Chip Rouse
Texas held the women’s Oklahoma basketball team to just six points in the third quarter and went on to post a 78-58 win sending the Big 12 race into a three-way tie at the top.
The Lady Longhorns outscored the 14th-ranked Sooners 21-6 in a decisive third quarter. Although it was the third quarter that proved to be the big difference in the game, Texas had OU on its heels from the opening tip.
Texas jumped out to a 12-2 lead, but the Sooners clawed their way back, closing the first quarter on a 13-3 run of their own to draw even at 20 apiece after the first 10 minutes. The game remained close through the second quarter with Texas taking a 40-36 lead into halftime.
The Sooners (16-3, 6-2) made just one field goal in the third quarter on 17 attempts, which put OU in a hole nearly impossible to come back from.
Oklahoma’s 58 points was nearly 30 points below its Big 12-best 85.8 scoring average. Skylar Vann led the Sooners with 13 points off the bench. No other OU player reached double figures.
There was something good to come out of the game, however. Taylor Robertson made two three-pointers that tied her for the NCAA career record for made three-point shots with 497. Her next one, which will likely come in her next outing on Saturday at Iowa State, will put Robertson in the NCAA record book as the career leader in three-point shooting.
Aside from uncharacteristic poor shooting, the Sooners’ main downfall in this game was committing 26 turnovers that resulted in 26 Texas points.
DeYona Gaston of the Longhorns was the game’s high scorer with 19 points. Shaylee Gonzales and Rori Harmon added 12 and 10, respectively.
“Hats off to Texas,” said OU head coach Jennie Barancyzk in her postgame press conference. “I thought they outplayed us and they were more physical tonight. They’re such a big team, and when they shoot it as well as they did (48.3 percent), they’re really good.”
Oklahoma is now tied for first place in the Big 12 standings with Texas and Iowa State, the Sooners’ next opponent, all with 6-2 records in conference play.
