Oklahoma football: Stanford offensive tackle transfer flips from Nebraska to OU
By Chip Rouse
It’s not over until it’s over. Oklahoma football has proved that popular phrase to be golden a couple of times in the past month. On Saturday, the Sooner recruiting effort picked up some major offensive line help.
Stanford transfer Walter Rouse had committed to Nebraska late this week, but OU offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh didn’t give up the fight for Rouse’s services and by Saturday morning his patient persuasive efforts had the veteran offensive tackle diverted south to Norman.
Rouse played 40 games at Stanford over four seasons. He was a freshman All-American in 2019 and this past season he was a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which is presented annually to the college player with the best combination of on-field performance, academic achievement and community service.
The 6-foot, six-inch, 318-pound offensive lineman announced the transfer change to Oklahoma via Twitter on Saturday.

“I never knew the power of one’s faith and gut intuition could so forcefully persuade a decision,” Rouse wrote. “That happened to be this week. I informed the head coach at the University of Oklahoma that I would be decommitting from the University of Nebraska and play my last year of eligibility as part of the 129th football team for the University of Oklahoma.”
This is a big get for the Sooners and Bedenbaugh, who are losing to offensive line starters to the NFL Draft. Offensive tackles Anton Harrison and Wanya Morris declared for the NFL Draft ahead of the Sooners Cheez-It Bowl game against Florida State.
Rouse tied for 12th in fewest pressures allowed this season. He allowed five sacks and was only penalized one time.
