Oklahoma football: Sooners continue to add defensive depth, gaining Texas State DL
By Chip Rouse
Oklahoma football has added a sixth defensive player through the transfer portal, earning the commitment on Monday of former Texas State defensive lineman Davon Sears.
The Sears commitment came 24 hours after picking up DL Rondell Bothroyd, formerly of Wake Forest. The addition of Sears gives the Sooners nine new transfers out of the portal, and they probably aren’t done, with the 2023 portal window closing on Jan. 18.
Sears, from Detroit, Michigan, chose the Sooners over heavy interest from Tennessee and also from Penn State. He has two years of college eligibility remaining. He was one of several portal prospects who took visits to OU last week.
The 6-foot, 2-inch, 290-pound defensive lineman played this season at Texas State and before that at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa. He is a former four-star recruit and rated as the No. 8 defensive lineman in the portal, according to 247Sports.
This past season, Sears made 15 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in a dozen games for Texas State. Pro Football Focus rated the former Texas State D-lineman as fourth in total pressures for the Bobcats in the 2022 season. He played at least 20 snaps in every game this season and can be expected to play an even heavier role for OU next season.
Sears is the eighth defensive lineman and the 21st defensive player Oklahoma has added to the 2023 roster combining the 2023 recruiting class and the additions from the transfer portal. That underscores the focus head coach Brent Venables and the Sooners are putting on defensive talent going forward
