Oklahoma football picked up offensive line help from the transfer portal on Thursday with the addition of Caleb Shaffer from Miami of Ohio.

The Sooners took a hit on the offensive line after the 2022 season with tackles Anton Harrison and Wanya Morris declaring for the NFL and Robert Congel and Chris Murray, former transfers themselves, out of eligibility.

Shaffer, a 6-foot, 5 inches and 333 pounds, started 35 games for the Red Hawks of Miami of Ohio over four seasons. He started 12 games at right guard this season but entered the transfer portal prior to the Red Hawks’ Bahamas Bowl against the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

He graded out as second on the Miami team in pass blocking and also second best in run blocking.

A native of the state of Indiana (Carmel, Indiana), Shaffer made a visit to OU this week and announced his commitment shortly thereafter.

An interesting anecdote to Shaffer’s commitment to play for the Sooners next season as a graduate transfer: His offensive line coach, James Patton, coached the offensive line at Oklahoma from 2006-11 and was Bill Bedenbaugh’s predecessor.

Shaffer is Oklahoma’s seventh transfer player for 2023. He joins DL Jacob Lacey from Notre Dame, TE Austin Stogner, a former Sooner who played at South Carolina this season, LB Dasan McCullough from Indiana, S Reggie Pearson from Texas Tech, DL Trace Ford from Oklahoma State and P Luke Elzinga from Central Michigan.

The Miami of Ohio transfer is expected to compete for a starting job with Savion Byrd and McKade Mettauer.
