Oklahoma basketball: Takeaways from a milestone Sooner win
By Chip Rouse
The Oklahoma basketball women played well both offensively and defensively in rolling to their sixth straight win and a 76-50 home win on Sunday over the Lady Jaguars of Southern University.
The Sooners shot nearly 50 percent for the game at the offensive end while holding Southern under 30 percent (29.2) on the defensive end of the floor.
Oklahoma broke open a 20-19 game at the end of the first quarter, outscoring the Lady Jaguars 56-31 the rest of the way to pick up the Sooners’ ninth win of the season in 10 games.
The highlight of the game came in the second quarter when a basket by Madi Williams put the Sooners; leading scorer over 2,000 points for her career. She joins teammate Taylor Robertson as the only two players on the same team this season with at least 2,000 career points.
Williams and Ana Llanusa both had 14 points to lead Oklahoma. Three other Sooners finished with at least eight points. OU reserves contributed 28 points off the bench. Only one Southern player, Genovea Johnson, reached double figures in the scoring column. She finished with 11 points.
Oklahoma led 35-28 at halftime, but the Sooners blew the door open with an 11-3 run to start the second half,
The OU women will play their final nonconference game of the season on Wednesday night, taking on Florida in the inaugural Jumpman Invitational in Charlotte, North Carolina. The tournament features four original Jordan Brand sponsored programs. Besides OU, Michigan and North Carolina are also participating in the tournament.
The Lady Sooners will begin Big 12 play on Dec. 31 in Morgantown, West Virginia.
Three points that tell the story of the game:
- While the Sooners shot the ball well and were especially stingy on defense, they did not protect the ball well, committing 23 turnovers in the game. Those turnovers turned into 14 points for Southern.
- Oklahoma won the rebounding battle by a huge margin, 54-26. Ten of those rebounds were credited to Liz Scott alone.
- Forty-two of Oklahoma’s 76 points were scored in the paint area.
