Oklahoma football: The McCullough brothers choose the Sooners
Oklahoma football got some great news on Monday evening when the McCullough brothers chose to commit to play for the Sooners.
The elder of the two, Dasan, is transferring from Indiana. The former Hoosier was a top 75 player coming out of high school and originally committed to Ohio State; he instead chose to sign with Indiana because his father was coaching there. Dasan had a big freshman season, getting honored as a freshman All-American and an honorable mention all Big-10. The stud edge defender had 48 tackles and four sacks on the season.
The younger brother Daeh is a four-star safety prospect who was committed to Cincinnati. However, on Monday, he officially flipped his commitment to Oklahoma. He played his high school ball at St. Joseph’s in South Bend, Indiana, because his father, Deland is now the running backs coach at Notre Dame.
Oklahoma was against stiff competition in earning the commitments of the brothers as both Ohio State and Notre Dame had a big interest in the pair, and to beat out a school their father is coaching is quite a feat for Venables and his staff.
How quickly can they play at Oklahoma?
Dasan will likely be a starter right away for the Sooners; he can play the Cheetah position or play as a true defensive end; however, with Dashaun White moving on, the Cheetah position makes the most sense. Daeh has a tougher path to early playing time but projects to fit in as a nickel or safety, however, he has also played quite a lot of cornerback as well, and with Jay Valai being heavily involved in his recruitment, he may end up at the corner for the Sooners.
Scouting for Dasan
Dasan is a twitchy, rangy athlete who is a bit of a jack of all trades. He is strong and physical but also very quick and flexible, he can use his athleticism to put tackles in a blender, but he also can show off defensive back-like skills in coverage. He had three PBUs last season at Indiana and was a cornerback and safety at times during his high school career. There is a reason he was such a coveted player coming out of high school.
Scouting for Daeh
He is a big and physical defensive back, 6-foot-2-inches, and 200 pounds. He plays cornerback in high school, and while he is projected to play safety or nickel in college, it is not out of the question that he could play corner at Oklahoma. He is a brilliant football player who uses excellent technique; he is a willing participant in stopping the run and takes good angles to make tackles. Very strong and makes a lot of negative plays against opposing offenses. He also has good ball skills and often gets his hands on the ball.
