After the devastating 49-0 loss to Texas in this year’s Red River Rout, Oklahoma football was ranked No. 47 out of the 131 teams that compete at college football’s highest level, according to The Athletic.

Oklahoma has won two of its last three games since that time and has been slowly working its way upward in The Athletic’s weekly rankings. The Sooners are at No. 36 this week, one better than in-state rival Oklahoma State, which has lost its last two games and has dropped all the way down from No. 9.

Every week during the season, the college football staff of The Athletic ranks all the teams at the FBS level, 1 through 131. The Sooners began the 2021 season at No. 8 in The Athletic rankings. Oklahoma was 3-0 after Week 3 but had dropped a couple of spots, to No. 9, in the 1-131 rankings.

After OU suffered its first loss of the season to Kansas State, the Sooners fell from No. 9 to No. 21 and then to No. 40 following the 31-point loss in Week 5 to TCU.

Over the past three weeks, Oklahoma climbed to No. 35 with the win over Kansas, to No. 33 after winning at Iowa State before dropping back to No. 36 after the three-point loss at home to Baylor.

The Sooners will not be ranked in the top 25 at the end of this season, but they would like to finish higher than the mid-30s in the final 1-131 ranking by The Athletic and other pollsters.

This will be the first season since 2014 that Oklahoma has finished outside of the top-25 rankings by either the Associated Press, the Coaches Poll or the College Football Playoff rankings.
