For the first time in three weeks, Brent Venables’ Oklahoma football Sooners did not move up in the national rankings despite a resounding 35-point win over Nebraska.
The Sooners are holding strong in the No. 6 spot in both the Associated Press Top 25 and the AFCA Coaches Poll. That’s because only No. 5 Clemson of the teams ahead of Oklahoma in the rankings had a lower margin of victory on Saturday than Oklahoma.
The top-six teams remain unchanged in both major polls, although there was movement within the top five in the Coaches Poll. Georgia jumped Alabama into the top spot in the Coaches Poll and Michigan and Clemson switched places with Michigan moving ahead of Clemson into the No. 4 position.
The top seven teams are the same in both polls this week: Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Clemson, Oklahoma, USC and Kentucky.
Three other Big 12 teams are ranked again this week. Oklahoma State moved down one spot in both polls (No. 8 in Coaches Poll, No. 9 in AP poll) despite a 63-7 pounding over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, an FCS school. Baylor is No. 17 in both polls after getting on the winning track again with a 42-7 home win over Texas State, and Texas is No. 19 in the Coaches Poll and No. 22 this week in the AP Top 25.
For the first time in almost forever (actually, the 2009 season) the Kansas Jayhawks are receiving national votes in football. Kansas received votes in both polls. The Jayhawks would rank 34th in the AP poll, based on votes received, and No. 36 in the Coaches Poll. Iowa State and TCU also received votes in the Coaches Poll.
