Oklahoma football is returning soon, but preseason NFL football has already played all three weeks of preseason! Which former Sooner stand-outs, have stood out on the field of play so far?
Carolina Panther’s Baker Mayfield
Baker was a top 10 QB in the NFL in 2020, but in 2021 the 2017 Heisman trophy winner struggled mightily while trying to valiantly play through injuries. The Browns took an enormous risk in acquiring Dashaun Watson, and it appears that the gamble will be to the benefit of the Carolina Panthers. It’s just preseason, but you can tell, that Baker looks much better coming off the injury situation. I think he could lead Carolina to the playoffs!

Cleveland Brown’s Isaiah Thomas
Congratulations to Isaiah and his family, as he welcomed a newborn baby girl to his family about a week ago. Thomas on the field this preseason has been a force, in the Browns opening preseason contest, Thomas had two sacks and three tackles for loss. The former Sooner standout appears to be a seventh-round steal and was projected to go much earlier.

Denver Bronco’s Delarin Turner-Yell
Turner-Yell projects to be a package player for the Broncos and a back up at least for the time being. He is one of those guys that has a lot of attributes you like but has some growth he has to go through. Still, he turned some heads in his final preseason game, with this sensational sack!

Denver Bronco’s Nik Bonitto
Bonitto was a freak for the Sooners and was one of the best edge players in the country in both 2020 and 2021. He burst onto the scene at Oklahoma back in 2019 sealing the Baylor comeback victory. He had a big learning curve at the NFL level and was slow to start, but in his final preseason game he seems to have put it all together, and had a two-sack performance!
#Broncos rookie OLB Nik Bonitto on his two sacks tonight: "I've been able to see those moves work in camp and some of the preseason games, I just haven't been able to turn them into sacks. Getting one tonight helps my confidence. I feel like I'm just going to go up from here."

The Viking’s Brian Asamoah
Asamoah suffered a leg injury tonight, hopefully, it doesn’t turn out to be serious. The former Sooner linebacker has been explosive and just special during this preseason. He may end up being one of the better linebackers in this class. He has turned heads in camp, but also simply turned heads on the field of play on TV as well. He is a super twitchy athlete, who makes big players and is a sure tackler. Sure would’ve loved to have seen him in this year’s Oklahoma football defense!
Rave reviews from Vikings camp about rookie Brian Asamoah. Has really impressed this summer.
